Guate Info

Guatemala is a beautiful country with very friendly people, but it's always wise to keep your wits about you and take proper precautions when traveling.

First of all, the CDC recommends vaccinations for Hepatitis A and Typhoid for all travelers.  In reality, unless you plan on drinking the tap water and eating tons of street food you will be fine, especially if you're only coming for the weekend.  If you feel like taking a walk on the wild side, definitely get them, but otherwise I wouldn't worry too much.  Nothing wrong with being safe though!

Malaria is only present in the lowland jungles, which we will be way above, so don't worry about that unless you plan on venturing up to Tikal.

You can get Guatemalan currency (Quetzales) out at most ATM's with your debit card, but make sure to let your bank know that you're traveling.

Pickpocketing and Petty Crime are common in Guatemalan cities.  Fortunately, Antigua is largely free from these problems.  Still, it's a good idea to be careful, and leave expensive jewelry at home.

We'll do our best to meet everyone at the airport, but if we can't work that out, we can definitely arrange transportation for you from the Airport to Earth Lodge, just let us know!

Things to See

If you've got time to explore...

  • Tikal - Some of the biggest and most spectacular Maya ruins in the world!

  • Lake Atitlan - A beautiful lake surrounded by volcanoes and Maya villages.  A great place to relax.

  • Pacific Coast- Black Sand Beaches, warm weather, mangroves and big waves.  Fish and beer on the beach!

  • Livingston/Rio Dulce- Small town on Caribbean coast with great seafood and warm water.  A little rough around the edges, but a great place to experience a different culture.
